Canine Health Information Center (CHIC);
Recommended Health Screens for the German Shorthair Pointer

What is CHIC?  CHIC is a centralized data base for canine health information sponsored by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA).

CHIC provides buyers and breeders with health information regarding diseases that are screened for within each breed.  (There are NO guarantees, however the probability a canine friend will develop an inhertied disease is reduced when test results are normal).

The following health screens are recommended by the German Shorthair Pointer Club of America:

1.  Hips (either OFA or Penn Hips)

2.  Elbows  (Minimum age is 24 months)

3.  Cardiac Evaluation (for CHIC the minium age is 24 months; with the exam being completed by a board certifiied vetrinary cardiologist).  (We at Pretty Prairie Kennel complete this exam at one and two years of age).

4.  Eye Examination (by a board ACVO opthalmologist; no minimum age)

5.  Cone Degneration (is a genetic test, blood sample is submitted to an approved OFA lab.  No minimum age required).

For us here at Pretty Prairie, CHIC health screens are a work in progress.  We submit our health screen results to OFA and this information is available publicly and can be searched using OFA's search tab.  Simply insert the dog's registered name and OFA will provide you with their health screens.

Upon completion of required health screens CHIC numbers are assigned to our dogs.   We note their CHIC numbers on "our dogs page."

We firmly believe in taking it to the "next level" with our dogs by completing their CHIC health screens, and field testing through NAVHDA.

NAVHDA also provides health and field "soundness," information.  Found on the dog's test report are bite evaluation (normal, butt (pincer) or over and under shot) and gun sensitivity.
